Understand the Form Before You File

This is an educational guide to the medical and practical issues surrounding the form. The official Department of Labor form, ECOMP, and current OWCP instructions control the actual filing process.

CA-2 or CA-1?

Use CA-2 when the condition developed from work exposure over more than one workday or shift. A specific event within one workday or shift generally fits CA-1.

Three Dates Can Matter

DOL training highlights when the employee first became aware of the condition, when the employee first realized it was related to work, and when the employee was last exposed to the alleged work factor.

Evidence of Exposure + Causation

Occupational disease claims commonly require both factual evidence describing the work exposure and medical evidence explaining how that exposure caused or aggravated the diagnosed condition.

A CLEANER WAY TO THINK ABOUT IT

Exposure → Condition → Diagnosis → Medical Explanation

Occupational disease claims often demand more chronology than a single-event injury. The exposure history and the physician's medical rationale need to fit together.

01WORK FACTORSDescribe the repeated duties, exposures, or conditions.
02TIMELINEIdentify onset, awareness, work relationship, and last exposure.
03DIAGNOSISDocument the medical condition with pertinent findings.
04CAUSATIONExplain how the work exposure medically caused or aggravated the condition.
Important: DOL advises employees filing CA-2 to review the appropriate CA-35 evidence checklist for the type of occupational disease being claimed. Current official instructions and ECOMP should be used for filing.
