Understand the Form Before You File

This is an educational guide to the medical and practical issues surrounding the form. The official Department of Labor form, ECOMP, and current OWCP instructions control the actual filing process.

Wage Loss

DOL states CA-7 is used to claim compensation for wage loss while in LWOP status due to disability or absence for medical treatment, including after COP ends in traumatic injury cases.

Schedule Awards

A Schedule Award claim requires both the appropriate OWCP claim procedure and supporting permanent-impairment medical evidence. Use current OWCP instructions for the form or electronic filing method in effect when you file.

Medical Evidence for Disability

DOL guidance says disability compensation claims should include medical evidence supporting disability for the periods claimed.

A CLEANER WAY TO THINK ABOUT IT

Period Claimed → Medical Disability → Pay Information → Compensation

A CA-7 identifies the compensation being claimed, but wage-loss claims still depend on medical evidence showing why the accepted condition caused disability during the claimed period.

Important: DOL states that an injured worker in LWOP status generally submits CA-7 every two weeks while disabled unless placed on the periodic roll. Current ECOMP and OWCP instructions should control filing.
